What’s the Difference Between a Bay and Bow Window?

Bay and bow windows are great design choices for yournbspreplacement windows. While they’re more aesthetically uniquenbspthan other window styles, they are functional in their own right and offer respectable natural insulation and ventilationnbspproperties.

Bay and Bow Window

Renewal by Andersen® of Central Illinois discusses the difference between the two in terms of design and functionality.

Bow and Bay Windows

Both bow and bay windows are multi-paneled windows that extend outwards from the wall to create an eye-catching architectural feature for your facade. As a result, these windows boast an extra space on the inside that can function as a sitting or storage area. Despite theirnbspsimilarities, these two windows differ when it comes to the actual windows.

A bay window is more linear and employs three or more window panels flanked by two casement or double-hung windows. Bow windows, as their name suggests, extend outwards like a bow and havenbspa central non-operable picture frame flanked by functional windows. As a result, they appear larger than bay windows.

Home Placement

Both bay and bow windows can be installed anywhere in the room. However, they take up more wall space than other window designs. Bow windows, in particular, are better suited for larger rooms such as the main living room or kitchen since their placement directly positions them in the home’s facade.

Bay windows can be installed in smaller rooms because they don’t extend too much from the wall and are more linearly oriented. We recommend using double hung windows flanking the main three windows. They offer more versatility when it comes to allowing air flow, which ensures proper ventilation even in smaller spaces.

"I would recommend RBA of Central Illinois for QUALITY windows and doors. Compared to our old cheap, thin vinyl windows, Andersen blows them away. You can easily tell by how well the sliding doors fit and close, and how heavy duty they are. We also cannot hear the wind rushing through the house in inclement weather anymore! And the black window frames we went with are amazing to look at. Aaron, Al, Darrell, and Cory all were professional and went all out to finish the job, given the weather they had to deal with. I would definitely recommend. They were also on top of communicating with me given the weather delays, and what I could expect for them coming out. Five stars!"
