Two-Part Blog: The Anatomy of an Energy-Efficient Window

Windows do more than provide natural light and ventilation in your home; they also help control your property’s energy performance. This is why choosing energy-efficient windows for your replacement is ideal. They can help reduce your utility costs by maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature so that you don’t have to rely solely on artificial cooling or heating.

Efficient Window

Few know, however, that each component of your window helps determine its functionality and efficiency. Renewal by Andersen® of Central Illinois shares the components that contribute to your window’s energy efficiency:

The Framing Material

Your window’s frame affects its resistance to air leakage and heat conduction. A more secure frame results in a more efficient window. Different materials can provide different levels of efficiency, but none can compare to our exclusive Fibrex® frames. This composite material has the low-maintenance features of vinyl and the natural insulation properties of wood without the drawbacks of either. This way, you can enjoy durable frames without worrying about water damage or rot.

The Glass

The window glass, or glazing, affects how much solar radiation your windows absorb. Its energy efficiency is measured by several values, but the two most important numbers you should look for are the U-value and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The SHGC gauges the amount of heat entering the room. This is usually a number between 0 and 1. Windows with a low SHGC are less likely to waste cool air.

Meanwhile, U-value measures the amount of heat that escapes from the room. Its value is determined by a number that falls between 0.2 and 1.2. The lower the number, the better the window is at keeping your interior warm and cozy.

Renewal by Andersen of Central Illinois offers a selection of highly energy-efficient replacement windows. Our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass ensures that your home stays comfortable all year round.

Quality of Installation

The installation has a significant effect on your window’s energy efficiency. You may have chosen the best glass and frame materials, but you won’t reap their benefits if the window is installed poorly.

Our installation team undergoes rigorous training to ensure that they are updated on the latest in installation techniques and practices. This means that they can provide a high-quality window installation, regardless of the window type.

"I would recommend RBA of Central Illinois for QUALITY windows and doors. Compared to our old cheap, thin vinyl windows, Andersen blows them away. You can easily tell by how well the sliding doors fit and close, and how heavy duty they are. We also cannot hear the wind rushing through the house in inclement weather anymore! And the black window frames we went with are amazing to look at. Aaron, Al, Darrell, and Cory all were professional and went all out to finish the job, given the weather they had to deal with. I would definitely recommend. They were also on top of communicating with me given the weather delays, and what I could expect for them coming out. Five stars!"
