The Long-Term Effects of Window Drafts

Windows add functionality and beauty to your home. However, old or poorly maintained windows are often a big source of drafts. Whether the fix you have in mind is caulk, weatherstripping, or replacement windows, know that inaction shouldn’t be an option, because drafty windows can drive up your monthly utility bills.

But why do windows get drafty in the first place? We discuss more below.

Reasons for Drafty Windows

Constant exposure to harsh elements can cause windows to deteriorate and become inefficient. With age, the strips and seals lose their strength and the ability to keep the windows airtight, providing an opening for drafts to pass through.

Depending on the window frame material, sudden temperature changes can cause it to contract and expand. Wooden frames, for instance, shrink with age due to constant abuse from the weather. This leads to gaps where drafts can penetrate and affect your indoor comfort levels.

Drafty windows can also be incredibly noisy, especially when strong winds pass them by. Poor installation is also seen as a factor, with the windows performing less efficiently than when professionally installed. If you notice any of these warning signs, then it might be time to shop for replacement windows.

Fixing Drafty Windows

There are a variety of quick fixes for your drafty windows, especially if more permanent solutions have to wait until spring or summer. For example, you can use rope caulk, which is soft, sticky stuff that can be shaped and used to cover the gaps. The caulk can then be removed once winter is over. Shrink film also works—just cover the deteriorated seal and heat with a hairdryer to keep drafts out.

Window replacement, however, is a better long-term solution against drafts. This makes sense if your current windows are nearing the end of their life span. "I would recommend RBA of Central Illinois for QUALITY windows and doors. Compared to our old cheap, thin vinyl windows, Andersen blows them away. You can easily tell by how well the sliding doors fit and close, and how heavy duty they are. We also cannot hear the wind rushing through the house in inclement weather anymore! And the black window frames we went with are amazing to look at. Aaron, Al, Darrell, and Cory all were professional and went all out to finish the job, given the weather they had to deal with. I would definitely recommend. They were also on top of communicating with me given the weather delays, and what I could expect for them coming out. Five stars!"
