Patio Doors and Windows: Do They Have to Match?

When it comes to windows and patio doors, some homeowners often wonder if they need to make them match with one another. The short answer to this question is no, your windows and patio door don’t always need to match. While there’s nothing wrong with doing so, experts recommend that you focus on matching your doors and windows to your home’s style.

Homes that are built in the traditional style, such as Colonial, Cape Cod and Georgian homes, often match with windows that are symmetrically placed and have front-facing gables. These windows usually include double-hung, bay and bow, and transom windows. If you so desire, you can even add the traditional pattern window grilles for increased aesthetic appeal.

In terms of doors, meanwhile, traditional homes can have entry doors that are made of wood or fiberglass for a timeless and classic look.

As opposed to the traditional home styles, contemporary homes have a modern touch to them and are characterised by clean lines and asymmetrical designs. Replacement windows that work well with contemporary homes are usually fixed, sliding and casement windows as these windows provide a clean aesthetic while providing a clear view of the outdoors. As for their doors, on the other hand, a contemporary home can have an entryway door that’s unadorned and sleek with a warm wood finish to prevent the home from feeling too cold or sterile.

The Craftsman style of homes were developed in the early 1900s and usually have low-pitched roofs, porches with thick square columns, and exposed beams. The windows that match this home style are usually stained glass windows that can keep up with the home’s overall design while its doors are usually made of solid wood with a decorative glass or divided-light window on top.

"I would recommend RBA of Central Illinois for QUALITY windows and doors. Compared to our old cheap, thin vinyl windows, Andersen blows them away. You can easily tell by how well the sliding doors fit and close, and how heavy duty they are. We also cannot hear the wind rushing through the house in inclement weather anymore! And the black window frames we went with are amazing to look at. Aaron, Al, Darrell, and Cory all were professional and went all out to finish the job, given the weather they had to deal with. I would definitely recommend. They were also on top of communicating with me given the weather delays, and what I could expect for them coming out. Five stars!"
