5 of History’s Most Famous Windows

As an avid follower of our blog, you’re already familiar with our tips, lists, and other things that we hope you find helpful. Once in awhile, we try to mix things up and post things of interest. In this case, here’s a list of the world’s most famous windows.

  1. The Vostok’s Porthole – It was the 60s, when the Space Race between the U.S. and Russia was in full swing. After successfully launching Sputnik 1, Russia followed through by launching the first human into space aboard the spacecraft Vostok. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was famously quoted as saying “I see Earth, it is so beautiful,” while looking out his porthole window. While not a terrestrial window, Vostok’s porthole was the window where a human being was given the first view of the planet Earth from space.

  2. The Waldspirale – The Waldspirale—“forest spiral”—is a residential building complex built during the 1990s and completed in 2000 in Darmstadt, Germany. Designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, this building is famous not because of any particular window but of its 1,000 windows, none of which are the same. The exterior displays unique shapes ranging from double-hung windows to circular and trapezoidal windows. If this motif inspires you, we can build specialty replacement windows that can match the assorted shapes of the Waldspirale.

  3. Sainte-Chapelle – The Sainte-Chapelle (“holy chapel”) was the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century. The world-famous stained glass windows feature over 1,000 biblical figures in over 6,000 square feet of stained glass—an amazing feat of craftsmanship.

  4. The Pope’s Window – The Pope’s window is located on the top floor of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. Devout Catholics worldwide are familiar with this window, as Popes past and present delivered the Angelus from this window every Sunday at midday. Given the window’s size, it’s actually closer in function to our traditional French doors, with simple horizontal grilles and oversized shutters.

"I would recommend RBA of Central Illinois for QUALITY windows and doors. Compared to our old cheap, thin vinyl windows, Andersen blows them away. You can easily tell by how well the sliding doors fit and close, and how heavy duty they are. We also cannot hear the wind rushing through the house in inclement weather anymore! And the black window frames we went with are amazing to look at. Aaron, Al, Darrell, and Cory all were professional and went all out to finish the job, given the weather they had to deal with. I would definitely recommend. They were also on top of communicating with me given the weather delays, and what I could expect for them coming out. Five stars!"
