Energy-efficient windows can help cut your heating costs, but if you want to improve your home’s overall energy efficiency, you’ll need to incorporate a bit of passive solar design. Renewal by Andersen® of Central Illinois, your go-to company in the state for replacement windows, shows you how below.
How Passive Solar Design Works
A home that incorporates passive solar design absorbs heat from the sun and distributes it throughout its interior using fans and blowers, allowing your HVAC system to maintain comfortable temperatures indoors while keeping power consumption to a minimum.
Incorporating Passive Solar Design Into Your Home
There’s no need to install a system of fans and blowers to take advantage of passive solar design—all you need to do is install your new windows on the south side of your home, which normally receives the greatest amount of sunlight. This ensures your home takes full advantage of the sunlight.
Reducing UV Damage
However, higher exposure to UV rays can cause fading in your hardwood floors and the rest of your interior, which is why we strongly recommend installing energy-efficient windows.
In particular, we recommend windows that can block UV rays. If you’re looking for one, our Low-E4® SmartSun™ glass blocks 95% of UV rays. Plus, windows with this glass option are 70% and 49% more energy-efficient than a standard dual-pane window in summer and winter respectively.
Low-E4 glass windows are suitable for all climates, but for those living in the midwest, our PassiveSun® glass windows with HeatLock® Technology are a better choice. The PassiveSun glass allows heat from the sun to enter your home while our new HeatLock Technology makes sure it stays inside, optimizing indoor heating.
