Broken Windows: What Do You Do Next?

Windows can break for many reasons: it could be a stress crack that grew over time, damage caused by a hailstorm or maybe some neighborhood kid hit a home run that have also unintentionally hit your home. Replacement windows company Renewal by Andersen® of Central Illinois shares a quick guide on what you should do if one or more of your windows break.

Safety First: Clean the Broken Glass

The first thing you should do is make sure no one in your household accidentally steps on broken glass. Before you start clearing the area, make sure you take picture of the damage for later reference. Take out a nylon brush and sweep the glass away for later disposal. Keep the door of the affected room closed to minimize heat gain (or heat loss, if it’s winter) as you deal with the broken window.

Call Your Contractor and Insurance Provider

It may seem like the obvious first step, but many homeowners fail to call for repairs immediately once the windows are damaged. You might be tempted to investigate the cause; don’t. Instead call your window contractor for repairs or replacement. If your windows are covered by your homeowners’ insurance, call your insurance provider.

Take Temporary Measures

Unless your area is hit by a storm, your window contractor and insurance adjuster may not arrive in the same day, so you should take measures to keep your home sealed. If the windows are cracked, apply painter’s tape along the cracks to reduce the risks of shattering. If one or more pane is shattered, particularly if it’s as big as a bay window, wear safety gloves and remove pieces of loose glass from the windows.

If the window appointment will take more than a few hours, it would be best to board up the window opening. In addition to minimizing air leaks, it also helps keep your windows secure from curious animals that may wander into the broken window. If your window frames are in good condition, your window contractor may recommend an insert window replacement, where only the sashes are replaced.

Reviews

"I would recommend RBA of Central Illinois for QUALITY windows and doors. Compared to our old cheap, thin vinyl windows, Andersen blows them away. You can easily tell by how well the sliding doors fit and close, and how heavy duty they are. We also cannot hear the wind rushing through the house in inclement weather anymore! And the black window frames we went with are amazing to look at. Aaron, Al, Darrell, and Cory all were professional and went all out to finish the job, given the weather they had to deal with. I would definitely recommend. They were also on top of communicating with me given the weather delays, and what I could expect for them coming out. Five stars!"
